Paediatric First Aid Annual Refresher (QAR)

The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) Statutory Framework recommends that early years providers consider whether paediatric first aiders should undertake annual refresher training to maintain essential skills and stay up to date with current paediatric first aid procedures.

​

The Paediatric First Aid Annual Refresher (QAR) course has been designed to allow qualified paediatric first aiders to refresh their knowledge and practise key lifesaving skills each year, helping them remain confident and competent until their full requalification training is required.

​

During the course, learners will revisit essential paediatric first aid techniques and practise practical skills such as CPR and managing choking incidents.

​

Successful candidates leave the course with renewed confidence and up-to-date knowledge, ensuring they remain prepared to respond effectively to emergencies involving infants and children.

​

Course Duration

3 hours

This short refresher course is delivered through a combination of practical demonstrations, guided discussion, and hands-on skills practice.

​

Course Programme

During the course, learners will develop the knowledge and practical skills required to deal with a range of paediatric first aid situations.

Topics include:

  • Aim and responsibilities of the first aider

  • Priorities of treatment

  • Primary and secondary assessment

  • Infant and child CPR and AED

  • Airway obstruction (choking)

  • Wounds and bleeding

  • Burns

  • Shock

  • Managing an unresponsive infant or child

  • Seizures and other common medical emergencies

Qualification

Upon completion, learners will receive a:

Paediatric First Aid Annual Refresher (QAR) – Certificate of Attendance

This course is designed as supplementary training and does not replace the QA Level 3 Award in Paediatric First Aid (RQF) qualification required every three years.
